Day Two: “Sweet Savor”
Tuesday is salmon day at our house. Salmon isn’t my favorite food by any stretch of the imagination; the favorite food would definitely involve chocolate in some form. But in an attempt to improve our age-related health issues, I have convinced my wary hubby to give my efforts a chance. After much online research, I was convinced that more fish in our diet would improve many of the medical issues we were battling. Although my mate was in panic mode, I discovered an amazing fact! If I use a few well-chosen herbs, spices, and lemon, any fishy smell can be camouflaged. I knew that success was mine when Hubby waltzed through the kitchen, commenting on the “wonderful aroma” escaping from the oven. That wonderful aroma was the stinky salmon that my skeptical husband KNEW he was going to hate as soon as I placed it in our shopping cart a few days prior.
Our sense of smell is essential to our enjoyment of our foods. Our ability to detect odors is the result of specialized sensory cells, cells which are renewed every 30 to 60 days. Smells can trigger memories, warn us of danger, or simply enhance our enjoyment of a bouquet of flowers. The Bible encourages me to be a “sweet savour” to my heavenly Father. My desire is that my love, obedience, service, fellowship, and devotion to Him will be a sweet odor that will fill Heaven with praise and honor. I want to “walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savor.” He bled and died for this “stinky fish” and I owe Him a life that is a sweet sacrifice of praise. May the actions of my hands and the intents of my heart today present a pleasant aroma to my Father.
II Corinthians 2:15 For we are a sweet savour of Christ… Numbers 29:36 But ye shall offer a burnt offering…of a sweet savour unto the LORD. Heavenly Father,
I want my life to be full of sweet smells for You! Please help me to live my life mirroring the sacrifice that Christ willingly offered for me. Keep me clean and well-pleasing to you.
