Day Nineteen “Angel’s Food”
This was one of my favorite desserts as a kid. My sister, who is eight years my elder, made one of the meanest angel food cakes on the planet. By meanest, I mean YUM! Awesome! The best! Mouth-watering! She prepared it from scratch, adding canned fruit cocktail before baking, and the result was a light, fluffy delicacy that her baby sister loved. That fruit-infused dessert was scrumptious! I love angel food cake to this day, although nothing has ever quite matched up to the cake prepared by my loving sister’s hands. So good!
I was reminded of that angel food cake from my childhood while spending some time with God today. He had rescued His people, Israel, answering their desperate cries for redemption. For over four-hundred years, they had been slaves in Egypt, subject to the will of a cruel, heathen Pharaoh. They cried out to God in their misery and He sent them a deliverer, Moses. Through a miraculous series of events, God took His people from that land, marched them through the Red Sea, and planted their feet solidly on the path to the Promised Land, keeping them safely under His guidance and provincial care. One would think that after witnessing God work in such an awesome way, their faith would be unshakeable, but not so, for soon the complaints began. “And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.” What shall we eat? Did God bring us here to die? “Can God furnish a table in the wilderness?” God was angered by their weak faith and murmuring, but responded in grace, forgiveness, compassion, and love. Scripture tells us that the Provider opened the doors of heaven and “rained down manna” for them to eat. A loving God provided food for His children, “…angel’s food,” freely given, all they had to do was pick it up off of the ground.
How good is our God? He is good enough to serve angel’s food to an unworthy, complaining group of people in the middle of the wilderness. Just as that angel’s food sustained those pilgrims, He sustains us, both physically and spiritually. Our homes, food, clothing, all provided by His hand. And His Word is there for us to partake whenever we need to hear from Him, the Holy Spirit waiting to guide us to higher ground. Take some time today to feast on His Word. His angel’s food is definitely the best! Have YOU thanked Him today?
Psalm 78:25 Man did eat angel’s food: he sent them meat to the full.
Lord, always remind me of your care and provision for me. Although unworthy of Your love, I find myself constantly showered by Your blessings. Help me never to take those many blessings for granted. I have access to Your Word, a feast for my hungry soul. Thank You for being such a benevolent Father.
