You are about to be wowed, dare I say, impressed! I am about to share with you my vast knowledge of the game of football. Needless to say, this shouldn’t take long. Let’s talk offensive line, consisting of eleven guys. For those of you who are as football-dense as I am, the offensive line is on the field when YOUR team has the ball and the opportunity to score. The field general, known as the quarterback, calls the plays. His name is generally most popular and well-known among fans, but he is certainly not a one-man show. Close to him on the field are the backs, good runners, fast, but also able to block or pass the ball if necessary. Gifted with blazing speed and awesome hand-eye coordination are the wide receivers, and that’s exactly what they do, they receive the passes thrown by the quarterback. The tight end is a man of many hats, blocking, running, and catching passes. Then, there are those five offensive linemen, consisting of two tackles, two guards, and a center-big, strong, burly, and singular in purpose-protect that quarterback at all costs. The team is assembled, ready to focus on the task of getting that football across the goal line.
When taking on our enemy, Satan, or attempting to accomplish a work for God, there is no shame in seeking a multitude of counselors, a solid group of trusted Christians who can come along side and render aid when it is most needed. When Moses was carrying out his calling to lead God’s people on their pilgrimage from Egypt to Canaan, he met up with his father-in-law, Jethro, while God’s children “encamped at the mount of God.” As day dawned on that blessed mount, “Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening,” ALL DAY! Jethro’s question to his son-in-law was a good one, “why sittest thou thyself alone…” Why are you carrying this load alone, Moses? You are going to wear yourself out, “the thing that thou doest is not good.” Jethro then added this wise counsel, “the thing is too heavy for thee, thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.” You need a team, son; strong, competent men around you to share the load, bear the burden, battle the foe, help you. Moses wisely “hearkened to the voice of his father in law…and…chose able men out of all Israel” to assist him in governing this huge mass of people. He assembled his offensive live, his team, a team helped him to be a more efficient quarter back.
We need not stand out on the field of service for the Lord alone. Godly counselors are imperative; His Word is clear: “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” Establish your team, but do it prayerfully, asking that God will open your eyes to those strong, godly companions who will make your game plan easier to execute. We may not hear of those linemen often, but without their contribution, the quarterback would be doomed. Establish an godly offensive line to support you as we labor together for Christ!
Galatians 6:2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Lord, thank You for those who help me on this road of life. Thank You for those who have helped me, worked beside me, strengthened my hand, and have shared my load. May I always be willing to come alongside my brothers and sisters and be their linemen.
